Now these were the people ^[Or “sons”] of the province who came up from the captivity of the exile whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon carried captive to Babylonia. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own city.

They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

The descendants ^[Or “sons”] of the gatekeepers: the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Shallum, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Ater, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Talmon, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Akkub, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Hatita, and the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Shobai; in total one hundred and thirty-nine.

The temple servants: the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Ziha, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Hasupha, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Tabbaoth,

The descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Solomon’s servants: the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Sotai, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Hassophereth, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Peruda,

the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Jaalah, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Darkon, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Giddel,

v57

the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Shephatiah, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Hattil, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Pochereth-hazzebaim, and the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Ami.

v58

All the temple servants and the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Solomon’s servants were three hundred and ninety-two.

v59

Now these were the ones who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer, but they were not able to prove their fathers’ household and their descent, if they were from Israel:

v60

the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Delaiah, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Tobiah, and the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Nekoda, six hundred and fifty-two.

v61

And from the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of the priests: the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Habaiah, the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Hakkoz, and the descendants ^[Or “sons”] of Barzillai (who took a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name).

These sought their record in the genealogy records, but they were not found, and were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. ^[Literally “they were unclean from the priesthood”]

v63

The governor said to them that they could not eat from the holy food of the sanctuary ^[Or “most holy things”] until there was present a priest for the Urim and Thummim.

v64

The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,

v65

apart from their male and female servants, of whom were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred male and female singers.

v66

Their horses numbered seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules numbered two hundred and forty-five,

v67

their camels numbered four hundred and thirty-five, their donkeys numbered six thousand seven hundred and twenty.

v68

When some of the heads of families ^[Literally “the fathers”] came to the house of Yahweh that is in Jerusalem, they gave freewill offerings for the house of God to erect it on its place.

v69

According to their ability they gave to the treasury room for the work sixty-one thousand darics of gold, five thousand minas of silver, and one hundred priestly tunics.

v70

The priests, the Levites, and some of the people lived in Jerusalem, and the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants lived in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
